Best countries to combine travel and work during your gap year!

I’ve never taken a traditional gap year; however I’m living and working abroad as an intern in Málaga, and I’d recommend the experience to everyone. It teaches you how to adapt, connect, and make the most of each day in a new culture. Whether you’re thinking about taking a full gap year or just spending a few months abroad, combining work and travel can be one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do.

Here are four countries that I think are perfect for anyone who wants to work and travel, based on my own experiences and what I’ve seen from other travelers along the way.

🌴Malta

Malta may be small, but it’s packed with charm. This little Mediterranean island is perfect if you want to work somewhere that feels like an endless summer. English is one of the official languages, so communication is easy and the vibe here is really relaxed. After work, you can go for a swim, enjoy a walk along the coast, or meet friends for dinner by the sea. On the weekend, you can explore ancient temples, go to one of the many parties, discover hidden beaches, or take a boat trip to nearby islands. Furthermore, the cost of living is reasonable compared to other Western European countries, which is great if you’re still on a student budget.

🏝Greece

If you’re drawn to postcard-perfect islands, whitewashed houses, and a laid-back lifestyle, Greece should definitely be on your list. However, what makes Greece special for me is the hospitality. Philoxenia, as the Greeks call it, literally means “love of strangers.” You’ll quickly feel like part of the community. Evenings are for gathering with locals, enjoying simple but delicious food, and watching the sun sink into the sea. Working in Greece gives you the space to slow down and appreciate life’s smaller moments.

☀️Portugal

Portugal has become a favorite for those looking for a vibrant and inspiring place to live and explore in Europe. The cities of Lisbon and Porto are full of young people enjoying life in cozy cafés and lively neighborhoods. What I love most about Portugal is the balance. You can work all day and still have time for a surf session or a sunset walk along the cliffs. The people are warm, the food is delicious, and life feels easy

🌅Spain

I’m currently living in Málaga, in the south of Spain. If I had to pick just one country to recommend. Spain is such a vibrant country, it would be this one. The days are sunny and relaxed, but the real magic happens after sunset. Even after work, there’s so much going on. You can wander through old streets filled with music, join locals for tapas, or sit by the beach with friends until late at night.

Whether you choose Malta’s beaches, Greece’s island charm, Portugal’s creative energy or Spain’s lively evenings, a gap year abroad is the perfect chance to step out of your comfort zone. It’s a time to discover new cultures, meet people from around the world and learn more about yourself than you ever could in a classroom.
